Overview

Hubei University of Medicine (HUM), originally founded as Wuhan Medical College in 1965, has grown into a premier medical institution serving central and west China. With a focus on producing highly skilled medical professionals equipped with strong ethical standards, solid theoretical foundations, practical expertise, and innovative thinking, HUM has expanded its scope over the years. The university primarily focuses on undergraduate education, offering 12 specialties such as Clinical Medicine, Nursing, Anesthesiology, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and more, spanning disciplines in medicine, science, engineering, and management. Anesthesiology and Nursing are recognized as National Distinguished Specialties, while Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy are key provincial disciplines. HUM also engages in postgraduate and international education, progressively building its global presence. The university is known for pioneering reforms in medical talent training, particularly in clinical programs and rural medical education, endorsed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health.

The university campus covers over 1.17 million square meters and is well-equipped with modern facilities, including three Provincial Experiment Teaching Demonstration Centers, an English Language Learning Center, and a library with a collection of 840,000 volumes. HUM’s five affiliated Level 3 hospitals – Taihe, Dongfeng, People’s, Xiangyang, and Suizhou Central – provide extensive clinical training opportunities, with over 7,500 beds and millions of patients treated annually. These hospitals are recognized for excellence in fields such as organ transplantation, assisted reproductive technology, and emergency care. HUM is also home to key research initiatives, including its unique Embryonic Stem Cell Research Center, supported by over 43 teaching and practice hospitals across the country. Hubei University of Medicine (HUM) has five affiliated hospitals, all recognized as highest Level 3 hospitals in China, offering extensive medical training and clinical services. These hospitals provide a comprehensive platform for students to gain practical experience and contribute to patient care:Taihe Hospital: Recognized as a National Civilized Unit, this hospital has received honors such as the National May 1st Labor Award and the National People Trusting Hospital award. It houses the only Embryonic Stem Cell Research Center in northwest Hubei Province.Dongfeng Hospital: A top 100 hospital nationally, Dongfeng is renowned for its excellence in organ transplantation and has been awarded the People Trusting Hospital title.People’s Hospital: Certified as a 3-A Level Model Hospital, it was among the first hospitals approved by the Ministry of Health to conduct Assisted Reproductive Technology. It is also highly trusted by the public.Xiangyang Hospital: Honored as a People Trusting Hospital and a National Excellent Unit for protecting consumer rights, Xiangyang is part of the International Emergency Aid Network and serves as a General Practitioners Training Base.Suizhou Central Hospital: Recognized as an Excellent Level-3 Hospital in Hubei, Suizhou Central Hospital is trusted by patients for its high-quality healthcare services.In total, these five hospitals provide over 7,500 beds and handle approximately 6 million outpatient visits and 240,000 inpatients annually. Hubei University of Medicine (HUM) features a distinguished faculty and a dynamic student body, focused on high-quality education and research.Faculty: HUM has 908 full-time faculty, including 180 professors and 277 associate professors. The university is home to 3 Provincial “100 Scientific and Technological Talents Plan” experts, 11 Chutian Scholars, and 36 experts with special state or provincial recognition. Notable scholars like Nobel laureate Ferid Murad and Academician Qian Xue serve as visiting or honorary professors. HUM operates 3 Provincial Experiment Teaching Demonstration Centers, with strong teaching teams in Anesthesiology and Basic Medicine. Students: HUM enrolls 15,000 students, with 8,000 undergraduates in 12 specialties including Clinical Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Dentistry.
